reviews the management and outcomes of patients with the diagnosis of iron deficiency anemia presenting with severe thrombocytopenia. The authors present 4 pediatric patients with iron deficiency anemia and severe thrombocytopenia at initial presentation. Charts were reviewed after approval by the institutional review boards at both St. Jude Children’s Proteasomal inhibitor Research Hospital and LeBonheur Children’s Medical Center in Memphis, Tennessee. All 4 patients’ hemoglobin concentrations and platelet counts normalized within 1 to 3 weeks of initiating iron supplementation, suggesting that in such patients iron supplementation can obviate the need for invasive diagnostic procedures.

“In this paper, microwave sintering (MS) technology has been applied in the preparation of ferromagnetic-ferroelectric composites. Several kinds of (Ni(0.3)Zn(0.6)Cu(0.1))Fe(2)O(4) (NiCuZn) ferrite with different contents of BaTiO(3)(BT) have been fabricated by MS technology. We found that the sintering time and temperature were significantly reduced from 22 h and 1100 degrees C for the conventional sintering (CS) process to 2 h and 840 degrees C for MS process, respectively. Experiments show that MS treated NiCuZn-BT composites possess both excellent ferromagnetic and ferroelectric properties. For the composites of NiCuZn added with 15% BaTiO(3), the real part of permittivity is larger than 50 below 20 MHz and the real part of dielectric constant is larger than 18 below 1 GHz. “The epidemiological

and pathogenic relationship between Bordetella pertussis and Bordetella parapertussis, the two causes of whooping cough ( pertussis), is unclear. We hypothesized that B. pertussis, due to its immunosuppressive activities, might enhance B. parapertussis infection when the two species were present in a coinfection of the respiratory tract. The dynamics of this relationship were examined using the mouse intranasal inoculation model. Infection of the mouse respiratory tract by B. parapertussis was not only enhanced by the presence of B. pertussis, but B. parapertussis significantly outcompeted B. pertussis in this model. Staggered inoculation of the two organisms revealed that the advantage for B. parapertussis is established at an early stage of infection. Coadministration of PT enhanced B. parapertussis single infection, but had no effect on mixed infections. Mixed infection with a PT-deficient B. pertussis strain did not enhance B. parapertussis infection.
