“Purpose: The incidence and prevalence of urolithiasis are increasing but clinicians also have the impression that gender and age distributions of stone formers are changing. Moreover, regional differences in stone occurrence and composition have been observed. We analyzed such trends based on a large series of urinary stone analyses.

Materials and Methods: A total of 224,085 urinary stone analyses from 22 German

centers were evaluated to determine the incidence of stone composition and identify age and gender distributions from 1977 to 2006. Results: Calcium containing calculi were most common in each gender. The overall male-to-female ratio of 2.4:1 increased

Since 1997, we observed a tendency toward an increasing incidence in middle-aged patients at ages 40 to 49 years. Conclusions: In what is to our knowledge the largest series of stone analysis reported to date we identified an age and gender relationship of stone formation and composition. “Objectives: Our objective was to evaluate the impact of vein graft harvesting technique on structure and function of vasa vasorum.

Methods: Paired segments

of great saphenous veins harvested either with conventional harvesting technique or no-touch technique were obtained from 9 consecutive patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting. Quantitative measurements, using immunohistochemistry and morphometry, were performed.

Ultrastructural analyses of vasa vasorum were performed with electron microscopy. “BACKGROUND

AND IMPORTANCE: Locked-in syndrome (LIS) is a well-known and devastating clinical entity, of which stroke is the most common cause; the distant second, trauma, usually results in LIS from basilar artery dissection. Our case report describes a posterior fossa subdural hematoma causing LIS, likely by direct compression of neural structures, which is a unique etiology and prognosis compared with other causes.

CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 34-year-old female experienced a posterior fossa subdural hematoma. She was taken emergently for evacuation, and on postoperative examination was found to be locked-in. The symptom complex, while classic for LIS, resolved at an accelerated rate compared with previous reports. Emergent evacuation of clot and rehabilitation were performed.

CONCLUSION: Prompt treatment allowed this patient to experience an accelerated and more complete recovery compared with the ischemic causes of LIS.”
